August 12, 2021Most of us have heard the commonly repeated phrase “most accidents occur close to home,” but is that really true or just a myth?
Fact or Fiction?
The question of whether or not accidents occur closer to home is a resounding yes. According to studies by the NHTSA, 52 percent of automobile accidents occur within five miles of the house and 69 percent within ten miles of the home.
However, the good news is, another study by Progressive Insurance in 2001 (10,000 respondents) shows that although more accidents occur close to home (77% within 15 miles of the home), these accidents are far less severe than those that occur further away from home. Most serious car accidents occur on highways going faster speeds for longer distances.
A couple more interesting statistics from the survey include the fact that only one percent of accidents occur 50 miles from home, and twenty-three percent occurred within a mile of the home.
Young and newer drivers tend to be more careful even driving in familiar surroundings and are less likely to get in an accident.
Why Do Most Accidents Occur Close to Home?
Now that we have determined that more accidents occur close to home, the question is why. Researchers have delved into the topic and found that people have a sense of comfort driving in familiar areas around their homes, and they tend to be lazier about safety.
When someone drives close to home, they don’t focus as tightly on their surroundings because they know the area well. Therefore, they let down their guard, and many engage in multi-tasking while driving, which causes these minor accidents. People tend to drive on autopilot using muscle memory rather than conscious awareness.
Some drivers also do not wear seat belts when driving a short distance, leading to more serious injuries in an accident.
Some other factors that cause “close-to-home” accidents are:
- Driving home late at night or early in the morning when people are tired and less alert and in the dark.
- Impaired driving (driving while intoxicated or on drugs).
- Distracted driving (talking on the phone, texting, or multi-tasking).
According to researchers, more than one-third of all fatal accidents occur between the hours of 6 p.m. and midnight.
How to Avoid Accidents Close to Home?
Even though the facts show that most accidents occur close to home, there are things drivers can do to lower this statistic and stay safer.
- Avoid eating, texting, or talking on the phone while driving.
- Stay alert, remain conscious, and don’t drive on autopilot.
- Always wear your seatbelt; even minor accidents can cause injury.
- Do not drive if you are tired or under the influence of drugs (even prescription medications) or alcohol.
- Keep your eyes and mind on the road.
- Observe the proper speed limit.
- Keep a close eye out for pedestrians or animals in the road.
