Common Motorcycle Accident Injuries
August 2, 2024How Can a Motorcycle Accident Attorney Help Me?
August 16, 2024When a motorcycle is in an accident with another vehicle, the motorcyclist almost always loses. Motorcycles just don’t provide the same amount of protection as passenger vehicles and other, larger trucks. While an accident cannot always be avoided, there are things that a motorcyclist can do to keep themselves safe on the road.
Before You Leave
Prior to leaving, you want to make sure that you have the right equipment, that your motorcycle is operating correctly, and that you’re aware of weather and traffic conditions. Here are some additional safety tips:
- Plan your route before and check traffic; choose the route with the least amount of congestion, if possible
- Check the weather forecast; you should avoid riding a bike if the roads are slick or there’s low visibility
- Wear protective equipment, including a helmet and reflective clothing
- Make sure the motorcycle’s brakes, signals, and headlights are working appropriately
Knowing the Rules of the Road
A motorcyclist should know the rules of the road. It’s a good idea to take a course about motorcycle operation and safety, if you haven’t already taken one prior to getting your license or motorcycle insurance. (Note: the Motorcycle Safety Foundation also offers defensive driving classes specifically for motorcyclists). Motorcyclists follow the same traffic laws as other drivers. When a motorcyclist obeys the laws and rides predictably, surrounding drivers will be more aware and prepared to avoid a collision.
Staying Alert
When a motorcyclist is focused on the road and paying close attention to the traffic around them, they are more alert to potential dangers. Being able to anticipate a problem may be able to help them avoid a serious accident. When a motorcyclist is on the road, they should:
- Chose the safest lane position; stay a safe distance from other vehicles
- Look ahead for road hazards like potholes and debris
- Don’t drive distracted
- Don’t drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol
- Watch for parked cars or vehicles leaving a parking lot
- Don’t assume other drivers can see you; be careful while passing a vehicle’s blind spot
