July 12, 2024What are the Most Common Causes of Motorcycle Accidents?
July 26, 2024Over the last two decades, riding a motorcycle has become increasingly popular. The total VMT (Vehicle Miles Traveled) for motorcycles has nearly doubled since 1998. You’ve likely noticed more motorcycles on Georgia’s roadways and interstates. But along with the growth in popularity comes an increase in accidents involving motorcyclists.
According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, approximately 6,080 motorcyclists were killed in crashes in 2021. Motorcycle accidents account for about 14% of all motor vehicle-related fatalities.
A motorcycle is more difficult to operate than a passenger vehicle because it requires more physical strength and skill. The vehicles are less stable than cars or trucks during maneuvers such as turning and braking. Also, motorcyclists do not have much protection in a crash and are more likely to be injured or killed. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that motorcyclists are 28 times more likely to die in a crash than those who are driving passenger cars.
Despite persistent warnings for drivers to remain vigilant, motorcycle accidents still happen at an alarming rate.
